The best way to cure moderate back pain is to limit bed rest and be physically active. Inactivity lowers the blood circulation level which affects the spine's ability to rehabilitate. Lying down or sleeping for long hours, does not in any case help in recovery. Sleeping for 7-8 hours is more than enough. Bed rest should be resorted only in rare circumstances. Doctors are advising people who have undergone surgery, to start walking a bit as this has been found to be helpful in aiding healing.

Continuing
with our Arthritis series, today we will discuss Gouty Arthritis. This
is a form of arthritis which is caused by increase of uric acid in the
blood and tissues. Crystals of uric acid accumulate in joints causing
Gouty Arthritis. Normally, swelling in
the foot thumb and knees is the most prominent sign of this disease.
Mostly this attacks within 3-10 days and for a period up to 36hrs.,
there can be severe pain. If this keeps on reoccurring, it can take the
shape of Chronic Arthritis or Advanced Arthritis. Few tests like blood
test, synovial fluid, urine test and X- ray can help in detection.
Change in dietary habits is the best way to bring change. Patients
suffering from Gouty Arthritis should avoid high protein food items like
non-veg, pulses, cheese, tomato etc. Also, drink lots of water. The
first stage of treatment for Gouty Arthritis is prescription of non-anti
inflammatory drugs. In cases of Chronic Arthritis, Surgery can be done.

Though Knee arthritis is far more common in
our country but Hip Arthritis is fairly common among well-off sections.
Mostly Hip Arthritis hits young adults in their prime. In this, pain is
felt in the hip joints which restricts its movement.
Excessive drinking is the primary cause. The drink disturbs the blood
circulation of the hip bone ultimately weakening them (Avascular
Necrosis). Its symptoms are; pain in the hip area, difficulty and
loosing stamina to walk. CT Scan and MRI tests help in detecting. To
treat this, medicines and physiotherapy are given. In extreme cases, Hip
Replacement can also be done.

due to lack of physical activities become weak. Weak muscle can either
be a cause or the consequence of lower back pain. In order to disperse
the pain, exercises specifically addressing the spinal region should be
performed under the supervision of a physiotherapist.

How effective is Spine Surgery?
Very
often we are asked this question-How effective is Spine Surgery? Before
answering this directly one needs to go into a fact that patient has
lived with persistent pain and a pain which is not allowing him to live
properly. In such a case,it is always best to go for surgery. Now the
answer to the question-given the advancement in medical science,
surgeries are more and more successful.I refrain from giving numbers
but atleast 3/4 surgeries are highly successful. But for surgery to be
successful, first surgery should go right and then post operative care
plays its own role. All in all there are multiple reasons and all have to
fall in place for the surgery to be successful.

New hope for Slip Disc patients
There seems to be some major break through in non surgical treatment of Slip Disc.According to a recent article appearing in press,it is possible to treat severe cases of slip disc by non surgical technique.Under this ,substance like Thrombin and Fibronogens found in blood are cultured separately in lab. Then with the help of spot gun with extra fine needle, these are injected into damaged disc .This process takes only 10 minutes.Startlingly in some time in place of damaged disc a new disc grows. For disc to completely regrow it takes about three months time.During this period the patient has to wear a specially designed belt.
Youngsters watch for your life style, stay away from slip disc
Considerably high number of youngsters are diagnosed with Slip Disc.Primary causes are
a)Long sitting hours and that too in bad posture
b)Lack of physical activity and consumption of junk food
c)Lifting of heavy weight in gymnasium without undergoing proper warm up

Post
operative care is where most of the patients miss on.Common thinking is
now that since I have been operated I am fine and let me live the way
the life I wish. This is fine and the operating Doctor shall be most
happy to see you in that mould. But before this, there is a recovery
period and certain precautions which need to be followed.Patients need
to be aware post operative care plays equally important role(if not
more) as the surgery, in aiding the recovery process.

Switch to better lifestyle for a healthier life
We generally get to read that life expectancy has improved with a young one born today, is expected to live up to so and so age.But it is not indicative of quality of life.Life style health problems like diabetes, hypertension ,back pain which were unheard of in youngsters in earlier times, are nowadays becoming a norm.As the name indicates, life style relates to how we live and what we eat.Little physical activity, late night partying, junk food is something common. It is time the society takes a course correction, otherwise long life which is supposed to be blessing may turn out to be a curse.
Exercising regularly is the best way to stay away from Back Pain
Once a person starts experiencing back pain,he/she looks to have quick relief. In terms of relief and that too a long lasting one ,nothing can match the benefits of exercises. But the irony is the pain does not let the affected person undertake that exercise, which further affects the disc nutrition. The physical exercises provide the much needed nutrition required to stop or minimise the degeneration of disc, which is the leading cause of back pain. There are specific exercises meant for strengthening of back (shown in the attached image).Do them on regular basis and stay free from back pain.

Opinion over the phone or email should be taken if no other option exists
There is a growing trend
of seeking medical opinion via phone or through e-mail. While the
technology has its own advantages-it enables long distance medical
opinion, it is still not a substitute for a personal diagnostic check by
the concerned physician. Long distance prescription should only be
taken if the patient is so far away that the patient cannot come
personally for diagnostic check. Minus the medical records and the
diagnostic check these opinion are not completely accurate.

The Surgeion is the best Judge to Advice you on the Surgery
Lot
of patients come and ask, Is surgery necessary? The answer to this is-
surgery becomes necessary only if the pain is not subsiding even after
several months of medication or the pain is hampering your daily
activities.
Even in surgery there are several options available. Some are minimally invasive procedures (e.g. microdiscectomy for a herniated disc), these lead to fast recovery. Some require a deeper incision and these take longer to heal. Which surgery is suitable, for that you should always trust the surgeon concerned, because only he knows the best.
