Winter season and body pains

Peak winters are here and these are hardest times for elderly and those who suffer from back pain. This season marks the revival of old pain and cause a lot of difficulty for people already suffering from various joints or back pains.

The best antidote against these reoccurring pains is covering yourself adequately and not skipping the regular exercises.

Don't strain your spine too much!

Our spine helps us in all bodily movements but we must not forget that it is designed to be straight. Too much straining not just harm your spine but also the supporting muscles and ligaments and is also a major cause of slip disc.

So, it is better not to try your body limits too much and keep working out regularly to keep your back healthy!

Doing regular neck exercises helps to strengthen your neck muscles

In our daily lifestyle, a number of our activities leads  to stiffness, strain and pain in our necks. While we should limit unnecessary activities and bad habits like staying glued to mobiles, tabs etc, sitting in wrong postures, wrong receiver holding positions while using telephone etc but many of the activities are sometimes unavoidable and we are left with no alternative than bearing with pain that follows. But in such conditions, doing a little bit of exercising may become really helpful.

A little time spent on neck exercises twice a day can strengthen your neck muscles and help avoid various neck strains.

Using mobiles the wrong way leads to severe neck problems

We have become hugely tech savvy these days and specially the smartphone is now an innate part of our day to day lives. But when we stay glued to our phones with our head bent down, our neck takes all the strain and leads to pain and stiffness.

Its better to use such gadgets only when required and not for frivolous activities. Technology is here for our help, not to make us dependent on it.

Steps for quicker rehabilitation post back surgery

Quick recovery is what every one wishes post back surgery. But there are various things which need to be taken care of for quick rehabilitation. Whereas it cannot be denied that the success of the surgery depends on the skill of the performing surgeon, various precautions if taken by the patient or his attendants, can improve the chances of quick healing manifold.

First and foremost is following the doctors diligently and taking medicine according to the dosage prescribed by him. Many a times it is noticed that patient change the dosage on their own. This can be harmful and should be avoided.

Physical exercises can aid greatly in recovery. But due care should be taken that no wrong exercise is done and exercise during the recovery period should be done in the presence of an experienced physiotherapist.

There are few lifestyle changes that if adopted well, can help enormously in the course of recovery. Smoking is to be completely avoided as it interferes with the immune system and slows down the recovery. Excessive drinking is also to be avoided as it causes choking of the nerves. Alcohol increases the sedation if consumed with the pain killers or muscle relaxants.

Keeping a check on your sleeping patterns also helps a lot in the course of recovery. Medicines taken post surgery often disturbs the normal sleep cycle. People either sleep more than the usual hours or don’t sleep at all. It may take some time to get back to the regular routine, so don’t take any stress. Stress can further delay the recovery.

Avoid sitting for long hours; instead go for small walks after a certain period of time as suggested by your doctor. Sitting in the right posture is equally important. Prolonged sitting and that too in a wrong posture can cause enormous stress on your back.
Post Surgery one should avoid bending forward & lifting of heavy objects.

Maintaining your weight is very important post surgery. Excess weight results in extra stress on the weight bearing structures like the discs in the spine. Maintain a healthy weight for healthy back.
Eat healthy and nutritious food and completely avoid junk food. Healthy food nourishes the entire body thus, helping in the healing process. Eat food which is rich in fiber content e.g. Bran and fruits are very important. Also drinking regular 8 glasses of water is necessary as adequate intake of fluids is also a must and aids in quick recovery.

Regular walking, stretching, isometric & extension exercises to strengthen the core muscles can do wonders in speedy recovery of the pt post lumbar or cervical spine surgery.

Just like bending, the best way to lift is to widen the distance between your feet and kneel down rather than bending. Also, make sure that your back should be straight while lifting. Follow the process depicted in the picture below.
